At the SFAA mixed mingle event on 2 September, an outstanding former Fulbright alumnus will receive the first ever Swedish Fulbright Alumni of the Year Award. We therefore ask you to submit nominations for the award at the latest one week from now, on Monday 23 August. The SFAA Board will then make the final decision on this year’s recipient.
Any person who has completed a period of study, teaching or research assisted by a Fulbright grant may be nominated. He or she should, moreover, have a connection to Sweden. The person who receives the award should have accomplished great things, adding to the wealth of human knowledge or international understanding, thus continuing the Fulbright mission.

The SFAA is in dire need of YOUR help!
The SFAA is run on a voluntary basis for the benefit of both old and new Fulbrighters in Sweden and abroad. Over the last year, our network has welcomed many new members and is now 358 Alumni strong with people from all walks of life but with one common denominator; we’re all Fulbrighters and we all share that wonderful experience!
An indispensable component of the work of the SFAA is our interactive website (www.fulbright-alumni.se). Through the website SFAA supports both current Fulbrighters and Alumni by arranging events, helping Alumni to keep in contact with each other, supporting members through a mentorship program and much, much more. Our website is the SFAA’s face to the world. One could even say that the website is the lifeline of our community.
To be able to continue to serving the Fulbright Alumni community and keep the SFAA website up and running, we need your immediate support. To cover our annual running expenses, we need to raise SEK 15,000 by the end of June.
The 2008 Annual Meeting decided that there should be a fee involved to be a member of SFAA. The size of the fee, however, would be left up to each SFAA member to decide. Through your contribution – however big or small - you will make a big difference for the survival and development of this great organization. We simply can’t do without you!

URGENT - Free Baroque Concert Saturday March 13
Dear Fulbright Alumni!
You are invited by the lutenist and Fulbright Alumni to a free baroque lute CD release concert in Sabbatsbergs Kyrka, March 13, 18.30. Don´t miss this opportunity.
Karl Nyhlin will give a 30 minute recital in Sabbatsberg's Church (Vasaparken near S:t Eriksplan) in Stockholm, on March 13 at 6.30 pm, presenting his newly released solo CD of baroque lute works by David Kellner and Silvius Leopold Weiss. This is beautiful but seldom heard music contemporary with Johann Sebastian Bach.
Karl Nyhlin performs regularly across Europe as a soloist and ensemble musician with leading European baroque music ensembles. His performing career has taken him to over 30 countries, and he has performed on several occasions for the Dutch royal family on state visits, most recently to the Olympic city Vancouver. In Stockholm he performs regularly at the Drottningholm and Royal Operas.
The new CD (dB Productions, dBCD131) will be released in the Nordic countries from March 8, and in the rest of the world a little later. The CD will also be sold at a reduced price at the concert. Entrance is free, and there is no need to register. Refreshments will be served after the recital. Welcome!

An Upcoming Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology Event
Sustainability: Fulbright Scholars - Shaping Tomorrow's Future Today.
San Francisco, California - March 11-14
The FAST Sustainability Conference will address topics such as urban planning, sustainable businesses, natural resource management, food & agriculture, consumer products and environmental education & communication.
This is the Fulbright Academy's Fifth Annual Conference, with 250 participants and 50+ Fulbright scholars presenting their ideas, work and visions for the future. Sponsors for the conference include Monsanto, Campbell Soup, Thunderbird School of Global Management and Loyola Marymount University.
The Fulbright participants and other guests are from more than twenty countries, from many disciplines and in many stages of their professional careers. They are young entrepreneurs, medical professionals, business executives, architects and engineers, leaders in education, graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and alumni working in other sectors. FAST seeks to build strong ties among the participants, so the conference is limited to about 250 participants - or about 5% of the 5,000+ recipients of the Academy's monthly bulletins.
The program includes an opening gala celebration on Thursday night, a film festival, an executive training on entrepreneurism, a workshop on global health, and deep discussions on Sustainability. We also have science tours , which are an integral part of the program and all for structured and unstructured interaction with fellow participants. Confirmed tours relate to national parks & environmental education, marine mammal conservation and biotechnology/agricultural research.

Dear European Fulbright Alumni,
The German Fulbright Alumni board has agreed to organize a powwow in Munich in September (11th - 13th).
As international coordinator it is my job to get in touch with other European alumni, inform them about this and ideally get feedback on our information policy regarding members in Europe.
You are welcome to mark the date of the powwow in your calendars and make plans for taking part. An official invitation will follow though. The topic of our powwow will be the consequences of the financial crisis, or (for better marketing) change@crisis.com.
"Since the beginning of the financial crisis the world has been in economic turmoil. Rather than focusing on the causes, the Fulbright Alumni Powwow "change@crisis.com" will discuss economic, social and (geo-) political consequences. Which strategies and actions can we imagine to overcome the crisis?"
Since this is a topic of significance to all European countries, we decided to open our powwow to a European audience. We are looking forward to a high attendance from no matter which European country and are hoping to give you enough time to plan your trip.
At this point we are trying to find speakers covering the following topics:
• comparison of banking-policy in different European countries
• the EU: help or hindrance in the economic crisis?
• every crisis also means "opportunity"
• calling the government for help = back to communism?
If any of you happen to know someone, at university or elsewhere, who could deliver a good-quality / informative / controversial speech on any of these broadly phrased topics (which can of course be narrowed down) we would be grateful for information in this respect.
Maybe you yourself feel inclined to be one of our speakers. That would be even better! We would then try to assist you in whichever way we can! Even though we cannot promise anything, free board and lodging will definitely be guaranteed.
Please let me know whether you feel that this kind of topic will be of interest to alumni in your country and if not, why not. We are working on making our events attractive to alumni from different countries and are dependant on your feedback.
As international coordinator I would also like to get to know as many of you as possible in person or by e-mail, since nothing surpasses personal contacts.

Your ideas for FAST 2010 Conference are needed
Dear Fulbright Alumni:
The Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology is laying the foundation for a very successful Fifth Annual Conference, which will be next spring. Hundreds of people have attended our previous annual conferences, plus many workshops and meetings that have been held on every continent (except Antarctica).
We would like your input for this upcoming celebration of Fulbright scholars and their achievements.
As a reminder, our previous conferences and workshops have addressed topics such as Science Research (2005), Digital Libraries (2006), UN Millenium Development Goals (2006), Energy & Innovation (2008), Nursing Education (2008), Future of Ciites (2008), and Innovation in Small Countries (2009).
What is your preference for the 2010 topic?
Three ideas are: (1) Biotechnology, (2) Health, and (3) Sustainability.
We realize that these are broad topics, and also they are related, but we can't have all three. One of these will be the general focus and highlighted in the conference title. Our annual conference is always multidisciplinary, so it is likely that other topics will be addressed as well.
What is your preference for a location for a conference in April 2010?
Three ideas are: (a) Brazil, (b) California or (c) Massachusetts.
Brazil was announced as a possible location, but we also have received strong expressions of interest from California and a return to Massachusetts. As a reminder, our previous Annual Conferences were in Berlin, Germany (2005), Panama City, Panama (2006), Boston, MA, USA (2008) and Skopje, Macedonia (2009).

Andersson & Paulsson with Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; April 16, 7.30pm
Welcome to the Stockholm Concert House on Thursday April 16 at 7.30pm when Anders Paulsson will perform B Tommy Anderssons´s Reflections concerto for soprano saxophone with the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer himself.
Reflections is dedicated to Anders Paulsson with generous commission support by Rikskonserter. It is based on a melancholy song by John Dowland and includes exuberant variations inspired by Benjamin Britten. The concerto is technically challenging and stretches the soprano saxophone´s possibilities beyond its known limits. Anders will perform in a high sitting position in order to balance the belltones with his thigh during the 3 octave legato leaps of the presto passages.
This concert is part of a 4-day celebration of B Tommy Andersson´s music which also includes the percussion concerto Apollo with Markus Leoson and the premiere of Garden of Delights.
The concert will be broadcast by Swedish Radio P2.

The Board has received numerous strongly supportive messages, and to date, members have contributed with SEK 6,500!
This is indeed good news, but more is needed if we are to meet our target of SEK 15,000. As this is of utmost importance for our association, we kindly urge all of you who have not yet contributed to do so at your earliest convenience.

Dear Swedish Fulbright Alumni,
The SFAA is in dire need of YOUR help!
The SFAA is run on a voluntary basis for the benefit of both old and new Fulbrighters in Sweden and abroad. Over the last year, our network has welcomed 26 new members and we’re now 348 alumni who come from all walks of life but share one common denominator; we’re all Fulbrighters and we all share that wonderful experience!
An indispensable component of the work of the SFAA is our interactive website (www.fulbright-alumni.se). Through the website SFAA supports both current Fulbrighters and Alumni by announcing events, helping Alumni to keep in contact with each other, informing members about interesting happenings and much, much more. Our website is the SFAA’s face to the world. One could even say that the website is the lifeline of our community.
To be able to continue to serving the Fulbright Alumni community and keep the SFAA website up and running, we need your immediate support. To cover last and this year’s running expenses, we need to raise SEK 15,000 by the end of this month. Unless we raise the money by the end of March, we might have to close the website down.
Last year’s Annual Meeting decided that there should be a fee involved to be a member of SFAA. The size of the fee, however, would be left up to each SFAA member to decide. Through your contribution – however big or small - you will make a big difference for the survival and development of this great organization. We simply can’t do without you!

Swedish saxophone artist Anders Paulsson lauches new website
The Swedish saxophone artist and Fulbright alumni Anders Paulsson has launched a new website.
Anders has performed in places such as Alice Tully Hall i NYC, Maybeck Hall i San Francisco, Wigmore Hall i London, Concertgebouw i Amsterdam, Palau di Musica i Valencia, Great Hall of Moscow International Performing Arts Centre, Kitakyushu Performing Arts Centre i Japan and many more.

Reminder! American Democracy Promotion from Bush to Obama - More of the Same?
Seminar to celebrate the USA Inauguration

US foreign policy under President George W. Bush has been highly controversial and unpopular around the world. One of its most provocative aspects has been its approach to democracy promotion, both in the rhetoric and the actions used under that umbrella. But it would be wrong to see the Bush administration, for all its many faults, as a one-off as far as American democracy promotion is concerned.
Underneath the talk and the more 'muscular' policies lie ideas that are deeply ingrained in American history and are highly influential in the foreign policy elite. These ideas did not come to life with the Bush administration and will not disappear with it. So, while Americans and foreigners have unfeasably high expectations of foreign policy change under Barack Obama, the reality is likely to disapoint them.
The Obama administration will certainly be very different, but democracy promotion will remain firmly on the agenda. With luck the language and actions of democracy promotion will revert to more traditional ones that Bush ignored, but even then President Obama may find it harder than expected to completely walk away from the Bush legacy. The bottom line is that in democracy promotion as in foreign policy in general, George W. Bush was a more 'normal' President than his critics admit and the same is likley to be the case with Barack Obama.

Popular demand in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Anders Paulsson´s debut concert in Kungsholms Kyrka created the opportunity for tonmeister Håkan Sjögren to record this beloved music.The audience in deep concentration inspired Paulsson & Canning to play beyond their normal emotional and technical skill.
The honourable Swedish Jazz singer Alice Babs was in tears after the concert, saying that at 84 (!) she got inspired to sing concerts again.

"THE DOMINANT ANIMAL: HUMAN EVOLUTION AND THE ENVIRONMENT" (same title as his latest book).
Professor Ehrlich will speak on how Homo sapiens became the dominant animal on Earth, and how it is using that dominance to destroy its own life-support systems. He will pay special attention to overpopulation, overconsumption, and inequity, and explain how every added person disproportionately damages the environment by, for example, exacerbating climate disruption.

US Ambassador to address SFAA at 2008 Annual Meeting
REMINDER!
The 2008 meeting will be held at the law offices of Mannheimer Swartling (Norrmalmstorg 4, Stockholm) at 5 pm on Monday, May 12th. Elections for new officers and board members, as well as, changes in the statutes, SFAA's annual report and many other important matters will be discussed.

IVA Live Concert at Hotel Hellsten, March 8
Opportunity not to be missed!
The U.S. graduate and Fulbright Alumni, Ms. Emily Samson Tepe, a.k.a IVA, will perform at beautiful Hotel Hellsten in Stockholm on March 8. A dinner is served before the show, or you can come to the performance only. Reservations are made with charlotta@hellsten.se
Ms. Tepe has released albums and performed in Sweden and the U.S., and has been offered a lead role in the new opera by Sven-David Sandström at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, opening in December 2008.
Ms. Tepe has a Bachelor’s Degree from Princeton University and a Master’s Degree from Manhattan School of Music, New York. She is originally from Wilmington, Delaware.

With the drastic change in market competition, the sport events are seen as a type of new media, and more and more Chinese enterprises are using the sport sponsorship as a popular method of marketing communication. The presentation will include the following parts:
(1) evolution of sport sponsorship in China;
(2) the reasons of the dramatic development of sport sponsorship in China;
(3) the consumers' attitude toward sport sponsorship in China, the factor analysis results indicated that, the scale basically fitted the two-factor model, including both the effects on the sports and consumer behaviours, and the effects on the sponsors;
(4) the effectiveness of Social Identity Theory in China.
The experimental results revealed that, it is easier for the subjects with higher identity of the sport event, to have more positive attitude to the sponsors, and stronger intention to purchase their products (services). This conclusion is of independence from the correlation degree between the product category and the sport.

Torsten N. Wiesel nominated for the Fulbright Award
Prof. K Kristoffer Andersson has nominated Torsten N. Wiesel for the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding with the following rationale.
Torsten N. Wiesel
President-Emeritus, Rockefeller University; Former Chairman of the Board and Honorary Life Governor, New York Academy of Sciences
Torsten Wiesel received his M.D. from Karolinska Institute in 1954. He has been President-emeritus at Rockefeller University since 1998, when he stepped down after seven years of service as Rockefeller's president. Under his leadership 30 new laboratories conducting vanguard research in key areas of biology, chemistry and physics were added, and the renowned Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center joined with Rockefeller in 1996. Professor Wiesel joined the Rockefeller faculty in 1983 to head a new laboratory of neurobiology, and later that year he was named the university's Vincent and Brooke Astor Professor. Prior to that he was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and Chairman of the Department of Neurobiology.
In 1998 Professor Wiesel was elected president of the International Brain Research Organization, which is based in Paris, and was named Secretary General of the Human Frontier Science Program in 2000. He also served on numerous Boards, including Chair of the Board of Governors of the New York Academy of Sciences (www.nyas.org). Torsten helped to build up the New York Academy of Sciences during a very hard time. The New York Academy of Sciences is an international Academy of Sciences and helps bring international scientists together. It has actively taken part of in Scientists Without Borders.
In 1981 Professor Torsten Wiesel shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for studies of how visual information collected by the retina is transmitted to and processed in the visual cortex of the brain. Torsten received the Presidential Award from the Society for Neuroscience in 1998. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences where he served as member of the Council. Since 1994 he had been the Chair of the Committee of Human Rights, NAE and IOM. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society, Foreign Member of the Royal Society, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the New York Academy of Medicine.
The Board of Trustees of the International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (www.hfsp.org) was proud to announce the appointment of Professor Torsten N. Wiesel to serve as the Secretary-General of the Organization. Professor Wiesel took office on 1 April, 2000, succeeding Professor Michel Cuenod who retired in March 2000 after 7 years of service.
The International Human Frontier Science Program Organization, it is true transcontinental organization bring scientist in word together as the Fulbright foundation and in the same spirit.
Torsten got the President George W. Bush National Medal of Science award announcement 2007 (On the occasion of his award, Dr. Wiesel sent this open letter to President George W. Bush concerning human rights and the Guantanamo Bay prison.)

The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to bringing peoples, cultures, and nations to a better understanding of others. Individuals, teams, and organizations in any field may be nominated. In fact, we seek nominations in the arts and humanities, the sciences, community development, NGOs, and business.
Please remember that nominees' contributions must be sufficiently noteworthy to be widely recognized outside their own countries. The most important part of your nomination is your rationale.

4th Annual Meeting of SFAA: 29 May
SFAA's annual meeting for 2007 will be held at the law offices of Mannheimer Swartling (Norrmalmstorg 4, Stockholm) at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 29th. Elections for new officers and board members, as well as, changes in the statutes, SFAA's annual report and many other important matters will be discussed. If you are interested in serving on the board please e-mail our Electoral Committee members Paola Konopik (pkonopik@hotmail.com) and Carl Michael Simon (carl.michael.simon@gmail.com).
The Annual Meeting will be followed by a pub night so, even if you can’t make it to the meeting we hope you will be able to come have a drink afterwards! More details will follow in early May.

The United States has a much longer experience than Sweden of integrating immigrant groups into its society. Yet with Sweden’s immigrant population growing rapidly, the need to discuss diversity in the Swedish educational system is of immediate importance.
The conference aims at uniting experts from the United States and Sweden to compare the situations of the two countries. With the participation of prominent representatives from the relevant academic, political and professional fields, the conference will be organized into sessions with keynote speakers and panel discussions.
Details of the conference will be announced shortly.

U.S. National Security academic seminar to be held by the United States Institute on National Security at the University of California in San Diego, January 20-March 4, 2007. Application is open to experienced national security university level
faculty or professionals from institutions of higher education,
national security and policymaking institutions. It provides a group of
18 professionals selected from around the world an opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. national security policy. Preparations for Moroccan Fulbright Alumni Conference 3-7 November 2006!

Nina Forsblad leaves the Fulbright Commission
Dear Alumni:
I am leaving the Fulbright Commission at the end of the month to start a new job with the Swedish Association of Graduates in Business Administration and Economics (Civilekonomerna), where I have been offered a position as project manager to administer networks and seminars. I will also work with the production of catalogs on undergraduate and graduate education within the field in the Nordic
countries and participate in educational fairs, so much is similar to my current work.
I have very much enjoyed all of our contacts during the years.

There are still a few spots left for the Global Percussion Network (GPN) performance on Thursday, March 23, so sign up now!
The GPN has gained great success worldwide and is a really worthwhile performance. The ensemble, led by Anders Åstrand, plays music in several genres – jazz, classical chamber music, folk fusion, and world music that incorporates the long melodic lines of Gregorian chant.

Some of you have already heard of this event, but I would like to invite everyone to our April conference, "From Orientalism to Postcoloniality." Even though the term 'postcolonial' tends to be used mainly when discussing the geographical areas of the former colonies of the British or European empires, it may turn out to have relevance in a much wider, global context today, including, perhaps, a "postcolonial America". The conference will thus have also an American studies aspect, and one of our guest lecturers will be Professor Joane Nagel, Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas at Lawrence. Our Fulbright professor, Anthony Grooms, will also give a lecture at the conference.

Fulbright Lectures in Lund on November 11th 2005
On Friday, November 11, Professor Nancy Hargrove, from Mississippi State University and currently Distinguished Fulbright Professor in the Humanities, University of Vienna, will give two lectures with musical illustrations by her husband, Guy Hargrove. On Monday, May 23, 2005 at 18:00 Emily Samson Tepe will perform Scandinavian music with texts in Swedish, Norwegian and English. Composers include Stenhammar, Almqvist, Petersson-Berger, Alfvén, Sjögren, Grieg, Sibelius as well as traditional folk melodies.

Fulbright Centennial Seminar & Dinner, April 8th 2005
To honor the memory of Senator J William Fulbright on his 100th birthday a seminar on the theme "Bridging a Growing Divide: U.S. - European relations in the 21st Century" will be held on Friday, April 8th 2005 at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs in the Old Town, Stockholm.
Following the seminar Fulbright Alumni and speakers are invited to attend a dinner at the Nordic Light Hotel in Stockholm.

Lecture by Ambassador Teel Bivins, U.S. Ambassador to Sweden
Wednesday, February 23, at 16.00 at The Swedish Institute of International Affairs, Lilla Nygatan 23, Stockholm (the Old Town).
Ambassador Bivins served as a republican in the Texas Senate from 1989 to 2004, when he was appointed US Ambassador to Sweden.
In the Senate he served as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and held positions on the International Relations and Trade Committee. For a while Ambassador Bivin was the President Pro Tempere of the Texas Senate.
A life-long resident of Amarillo, Texas, Ambassador Bivins has been self -employed in his family´s four generation cattle, oil and gas business

More than 150 Alumni in the SFAA network!
After an initial slow start, the SFAA network is now growing at a rapid pace. The network can now count 151 members and over the last weeks, there have been several entries per day. The goal is that we reach 300 by the end of April!
We therefore encourage you to help us grow the network by contacting friends and colleagues that are former Fulbright scholars and are not already in the network. Send them an email and ask them to fill out the Become a Member form.
We encourage all Alumni to go through their details and make sure they are complete and up to date. This will not only make it easier for your old friends and colleagues to find you in the database, but will add value to the entire Alumni community. Also note the possibility to upload your picture (max 100k) and a CV to your site. It's easy and will make your site look great!
The SFAA board wishes you great fun and joy in the use of this online network tool.

Fulbright 100th Anniversary Seminar!
On April 8, 2005 the Swedish Fulbright Alunmi Association in cooperation with the United States Embassy to Sweden, the Swedish Fulbright Commission and the Swedish Institute of International Affairs will host a full day seminar to mark the 100th Anniversary of Senator Fulbright's Birth.
Great speakers are already confirmed (see preliminary program http://www.fulbright-alumni.se/member/sys_uploads/forumfiles/18/Fulbright_Centennial_April_8_-_Preliminary_Program_002.doc). The seminar will be entitled - "Bridging a Growing Divide: U.S. - European relations in the 21st century". It will be followed by a dinner for alumni and special guests.
Invitations will be sent out to members of the alumni association by the end of February. To guarantee a place at the seminar or the dinner please respond to the invitations by March 11. Other persons will receive invites after that date. Watch this spot for updated information.

January 2005 Newsletter issued!
The first Newsletter of the Swedish Fulbright Alumni Association was issued on January 18th, 2005. Among other things it contains:
-a presentation of the Swedish Fulbright Alumni Association;
-a report from the Skokloster trip arranged on August 22nd;
-a report from the 27th Annual Fulbright Conference in Athens;
-a design competition for SFAA's future logo; and much more.

Pre-launch of the SFAA Website
SFAA is arranging a pre-launch event with drinks in order to promote and present the association's new website and interactive database.
The event will take place on Sunday, December 19th at Själagårdsgatan 2B, 3 stairs, in Gamla Stan at 17:00hrs.
